A Rich History

In 1922, a group of forward thinking individuals had a bold vision - to start a new Congregational Church in the growing southern part of the city. They began by organizing a Sunday School and Vespers service at the Brookside Hall at 63rd and Brookside; twenty-four persons attended.

From this humble beginning, Country Club Congregational Church began. Then, undaunted by the enormity of their vision, these forward thinking individuals turned their attention toward construction of a permanent home.

Ground was broken in April 1925, and the first service was held in September 1925. The early years of the church were tough. Just as the construction debts were being cleared, the Great Depression began - yet our earliest members´ faith carried them through. To this day, we have members whose ancestors were some of those pioneers.

Being born of such bold individuals, it shouldn´t surprise us that the church has been known to take bold stances on social issues. Our denomination was the first in America to ordain a woman - Antoinette Brown - way back in 1853. Our church has long been recognized for advocating the role of women in church leadership. The tradition of bold social views continues today. We were the first United Church of Christ (UCC) church in the greater Kansas City area with the official designation of Open and Affirming - actively welcoming all regardless of gender preference.

Just as in the past, Country Club Congregational United Church of Christ is vital and growing, touching people´s lives every day. Over 200 people call this congregation their church home. We come not only for the joyful worship services, but also for support and guidance in our lives and faith journeys. We give of our time and resources. Our missions are numerous and benefit the community, the city and the world. Many worthwhile organizations use our facility to make our community a better place to live.

Clearly, Country Club Congregational United Church of Christ is a shining star - not only to our congregation, but also to our immediate community and beyond.
